Leverage This Skill

By Steve Krupnik | June, 18, 2010

I'm in the office this afternoon doing a little cleanup work, and one thing I did today reminded me of one of your skills. Yes - I'm well aware of how skilled you are - but this skill is something that you most likely take for granted. How do I know this? Easy. Because most every pawnbroker I've ever met who is worth his salt takes this same skill for granted.

I received an e-mail this morning from a friend of mine who wanted a fair market value on a 1930s autographed picture he came across of a very famous musician. He had been going through the momentos of a deceased relative - also a famous musician - and discovered the photograph in an old scrapbook. He scanned the picture and send me a copy in his e-mail.

Nothing to it. I e-mailed him back four questions to answer about the picture, and within 15 minutes I had a reasonably close fair market value of the print. No big deal - right? After all, it's what we do. On the spot appraiser. And you do it so often - utilize this ability to put an accurate fair market value on unusual secondhand merchandise - that you don't give it a second thought.

Maybe you should.

Because the fact of the matter is, you've probably forgotten more about accurately valuing merchandise - nearly any type of merchandise - than most people will ever know. And to them this skill is an amazing ability. It is. But this is something you do every day in your business - valuing items for pawn or purchase - and this is why you take this skill for granted.

Look at how an average person values a piece of merchandise. They usually attempt to find the highest price possible of a like item for sale - and then they wish and hope that theirs will have the same value. Realistic? Of course not. I've known some pawnbrokers over the years who do the exact same thing. They don't run pawnshops - they run museums.

But what can this ability hold for you besides accurately and profitably running your pawn shop? That's what I want to discuss with you - because you have the opportunity to leverage this ability. Your on the spot appraiser skills can be leveraged for positive PR, no-cost publicity, customer retention and attraction, and even additional revenue streams in your business.

But very few in our industry take advantage of this.

Think about it. Your ability to quickly generate accurate fair market values on practically anything makes you an expert on the value of merchandise. Don't you feel that you and your business would benefit by you positioning yourself this way? It will. I've done it for years. And it's proved to be highly profitable. There is no reason why you cannot do the same.

I have placed many ways for you to do so in an easy and systemized matter in the Pawn Shop Advisor(tm) http://www.pawnshopadvisor.com/main.cfm coaching program. Because leveraging your abilities to benefit your business and the customers you serve can prove to have a major positive impact. Do not take your skills for granted - leverage them.

Keep your eye on the target and your mind on the goal,
